Akrit Jaswal - The Genius Wonder Kid

In February last; Akrit Jaswal; the miracle kid appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show. Akrit is a child prodigy who has been termed a genius right after his birth in 1993. When Oprah asked if he could understand Shakespeare at the mere age of four he answered, "I could understand it. That's why I was reading it".

Years ago, footage emerged from a remote village in India. The video shows a young girl receiving surgery to separate her fingers, which were badly burned and fused together. Why did this operation make headlines around the world? The surgery was performed by a 7-year-old boy named Akrit Jaswal; a teenager from Himachal Pradesh, India .

Now 13 years old, Akrit has an IQ of 146 and is considered the smartest person his age in Indi; a country of more than a billion people. This is an IQ level that beats even that of Albert Einstein. Before Akrit could even speak, his parents say they knew he was special.

"He learned very fast," says Raksha, Akrit's mother. "After learning the alphabet, we started to teach him joining of words, and he started writing as well. He was two." While in class II he cleared exams meant for class V. His mother realized he was special when he would answer graduate level questions.

At an age when most children are learning their ABCs, Akrit was reading Shakespeare and assembling a library of medical textbooks. When he was 5 years old, he enrolled in school. One year later, Akrit was teaching English and math classes.

Akrit developed a passion for science and anatomy at an early age. Doctors at local hospitals took notice and started allowing him to observe surgeries when he was 6 years old. Inspired by what he saw, Akrit read everything he could on the topic. When an impoverished family heard about his amazing abilities, they asked if he would operate on their daughter for free. Her surgery was a success.

After the surgery, Akrit was hailed as a medical genius in India. Neighbors and strangers flocked to him for advice and treatment. At age 11, Akrit was admitted to Punjab University. He's the youngest student ever to attend an Indian university. That same year, he was also invited to London's famed Imperial College to exchange ideas with scientists on the cutting edge of medical research.

Akrit says he has millions of medical ideas, but he's currently focused on developing a cure for cancer. "I've developed a concept called oral gene therapy on the basis of my research and my theories," he says. "I'm quite dedicated towards working on this mechanism."

Growing up, Akrit says he used to see cancer patients lying on the side of the road because they couldn't afford treatment or hospitals had no space for them. Now, he wants to use his intellect to ease their suffering. "[I've been] going to hospitals since the age of 6, so I have seen first hand people suffering from pain," he says. "I get very sad, and so that's the main motive of my passion about medicine, my passion about cancer."

Currently, Akrit is working toward a bachelor's degrees in zoology, botany and chemistry. Someday, he hopes to continue his studies at Harvard University.

However, Akrit’s progress came at a price: frustrated with the perceived lack of support for his gifted son, Akrit’s father became depressed and left the family home some time back, telling him not to get in touch until Akrit had found a cure for cancer. Adored by his self-sacrificing mother and treated as a genius, Akrit has no doubt he will do this. Akrit does not come from a rich family.

Watch out for this boy in the days to come. Looks like a Doogie Howser is in the making.

Here is a small sketch of Akrit in Wikipedia

He's a good memoriser, very bright to be sure, but if you did your research, you'd know that Einstein's IQ is recorded as 160.
So let's end the paean, shall we?

Put him next to an expert, and you'll see his ideas aren't that novel (gene therapy? Erm, duh), and he doesn't have the creativity to implement them. He's reeling off a load of facts. Challenge him and he begins to crumble.

As for his IQ = 98th percentile verbal; same for general knowledge; below average spatial/practical for his age. And when he's told he didn't so well, he pipes up, "I'm not feeling well," rather than accepting it. Part of genius is accepting reality and adaptability - two things Akrit can't do.

As the child psychologist said, "I'm not sure how much time he spends getting to the nub of the problem." Touche. Sounds good on the surface, but if you listen deeply, there's nothing remarkable there. Just like his IQ - very bright, but not remarkable.

Obsessive mother; tosser of a father who didn't love his son enough to stay when he couldn't get his son into uni. And what does he say, "Call me when I can get the kudos from your achievement."

Ah, the joys of subcontinental parents, whose self-esteem rests in their children's achievements. Thank God I got away from mine.

Doogie Howser? Hardly. Just a bright, cossetted subcontinental boy who was pushed and pushed, not least because of his gender. Do you think a girl who developed so quickly in that part of the world would have been so cherished? Probably not. She'd have been buried alive for being a demon.

How unbelievably negative! You sound like a very sad person. It is true nobody can really tell just how brilliant this boy is until he gets the opportunity to prove himself but your post just takes everything in the programme at face value, and spins the negative... I'm rooting for this clever boy to succeed. And for twisted jealous saddos like you to get their desserts.

my daughter was tested at her school at the age of 11 and her IQ was also 146. We were pleasantly surprised, bu we did not put her on a pedestal as Akrit's family did. My daugther also is working towards a medical degree. We are exteamly proud and supportive of her, but it would never cross our minds to blow our child's abilities so out of proportions. Akrit's family should just step back and accept their son is not THAT unique.

I don't understand how people can be so bitter as to not accept the fact that Akrit is a genius. Great news for your daughter who also has an IQ of 146, but was she able to read Shakespeare and fully understand it at an age that most kids are learning to read the alphabets. I don't know this Akrit person, but whoever he is I hope that he succeeds in all his future endeavours.
It's not a bad thing to have a positive outlook towards another person's abilities; in this case Akrit's.

I believe in the power of one's mind because when I was a child I had such bright ideas and didn't have the support to put them in this reality. I think that if someone invested on this child he could show us what he's capable of and probably shut the bad mouths of those whom are jealous of such an i9ntelligent person! Think twice before judging someone!!
Greetings from Portugal!

Well, I saw a documentary on him on youtube. He seems to be really bright. He definitely has an idealistic streak in him (kids around that age do usually have that), so I don't think he is doing all this for fame, he is probably serious about achieving his goals. He needs a strong support structure and guidance to succeed.

So, lets be happy for what he has, and not dob the kid just because one might not agree with certain things. Hey, if he does manage to find a cure, who knows it could save your children, grandchildren or parents.

Not many people get in life what they have set out to achieve, but for the sake of humanity, I hope he gets to his goal.

I think its great that there are other people who are ' just as smart ' however unless they can also perform an operation at the age of 7 and read shakespeare at the age of 4 they shouldnt be compared to someone who does. Your IQ doesnt determine everything, this child is obviously gifted. God bless him and all the best ! He needs all teh support he can get, who knows what hes capable of. He wants to help humanity at the age of 13. How amny other 13yr olds do people know who think in that mindset at that age.

All the best to this little genius !

Hi all,
I just watched a TV documentary about this young man, and decided to write a message for him on my blog:

When I saw the documentary I noticed that these people were set to discourage Him. He has ideas, thats great! He might not know all the details at the moment that is why he would need to work in a team of these great scientists who have looked in all areas with his ideas together they can work out something towards the fulfilment of His ideas. In other words he needs to be guided and encouraged and the same time protected from all the pressure from people around to fulfill them. He is a genius there is no denying that. I wouldn't want Him to grow up having lost all the passion he has for knowledge and the desire to find a cure for cancer.

He's a genius. Why are some people so negative and jealous? We should all be proud of him and hope he will reach his goals. Becouse he wants to help the whole society, and I'm sure he will do a good job.

- If you have a high IQ it doesn'y mean you're a genius. This little man has something special. It's not only his high IQ what makes him genius.

-Most people have a different IQ at younger age than when they are grown up. Einstein didn't have an IQ of 160 when he was 13. But later.

Einstein never took an IQ test; his estimated IQ is 160, but is only an estimate based on careful study of his achievements.

Askrit, if he is a genius, is not one due to his IQ score. I have a master's degree in Gifted Education; that early-age score of 146 for IQ is certainly high, well above average, but not necessarily "genius" level considering the young age at which he tested. My own son tested higher than that in second grade, yet the 140-150 !Q range is the transitional stage between highly gifted and genius at the adult level, and less meaningful and predictive when scored as a child. In other words, it's at the low end of genius if acquired as an adult, and so even less stable/meaningful of a score when acquired as a child.

In the end, it is not one's test score, but what one achieves with his knowledge that determines genuine giftedness. I'm encouraged by his motivation to succeed, and wish Askrit much success in his cancer research.

I will pray for you Akrit that you will find the cure for Cancer and Aids.
I pray you are happy and having fun as you need to enjoy life.
Dont be put off by those who say you are confused. You are a miracle. Adults do not want to be outsmarted by a child.
